My story begins; at three when my parents enrolled me in one of the Helen Doron centers in Ząbki, Poland, run by Dorota Tereszczuk.

As I grew up in this English environment, I understood more and more about what I was studying. I quickly realized that the English language somehow became a part of my identity. I believe that’s when my journey of becoming a “Helen Doron Brand Ambassador” began.

It all started from participating in one of the Helen Doron promotional campaigns. Two of my Helen Doron classmates and I recorded a video for the “Make Some Noise” competition. We started working on it two days before the video submission deadline, so we were shocked when we took second place in that worldwide competition. Later we participated in that competition again. A few months later, with the help of my younger siblings, we recorded another advertisement campaign for Helen Doron with even greater success.

One day before class, our teacher wanted to tell us about a program that might interest some of us before we started the lesson. He was talking about exchange programs in the United States. Naturally, I was fascinated; immediately after I came home, I started telling my parents about the program regardless that it was late in the evening. But, of course, my parents thought I was joking, “a 14-year-old boy going overseas alone for a year”. It indeed sounded fantastic.

Nevertheless, my mom researched and found a foundation that deals with programs like that. The requirement to start the process was to pass the language proficiency test. So, we decided I would take it and see what would happen later. Well, I did it. Then everything went by in the blink of an eye: applications, tickets, visas, and multiple other processes we had to complete. In August of 2021, just 3 months after registration in the foundation, I was already in Sebring, Florida, with my wonderful host family where I spent the next 10 months. The original plan was to enjoy my sophomore year in American high school, discover the culture, and relax. However, my calculation is not even close to how it went.

After arriving at the high school for the first time, they tested me on my English level proficiency. They decided to put me in 11th grade, which made me incredibly proud. However, after the first semester, I decided that 11th grade was pretty easy and that I could do better. After hours of conversations with guidance counselors, teachers, and friends, I decided that I would attempt to graduate 2 years earlier than I should. After a semester of taking 7 additional classes online over the regular stationery school and playing football & wrestling, I graduated from Sebring High School. However, a few months earlier, I realized that my educational appetite was not yet fulfilled. My year ended with me receiving a scholarship, admitting, and then enrolling in Webber International University, where I will be studying this year.

None of these accomplishments could have been made possible without the Helen Doron method I’d stated at three years of age. I received motivation, encouragement, and support at Helen Doron throughout all these years. As I said before, English is a part of me that will always be with me. I owe that to all my teachers at Helen Doron and the excellent method taught by Helen Doron.

Happy Birthday!! Jakub!!

The growth numbers speak for themselves, but it’s the efficacy of the Helen Doron English model that truly makes the education brand stand above its competition. “After 18 years with this company, I can see the results in our students. The reports that we receive from Cambridge exams show us that the results of our students are above the average as compared to other academies in Spain and even those in the world,” says Meena Athwani.

“The product works, the methodology works. Our students are doing bilingual high school, or their Baccalaureate or university studies in English-speaking countries. We have various ex-students now as teachers in our teams and we helped them reach there; we are part of their success. Knowing this is one of the greatest satisfactions that I receive in my work.”

Croatian national franchisee Danijela Haralovic discovered Helen Doron English while living in Hungary. As the family was there temporarily for her husband’s work contract, she sought English lessons for her then two young children that didn’t
include translation to Hungarian, a language they didn’t speak. She also sought an organization using the immersion method without any translation – just pure English.

Not familiar with the Helen Doron brand, Danijela recalls: “I happened to see a banner on a house that advertised Helen Doron. It said ‘English for All Children’, which I liked the sound of, so I Googled the company and found there was a Learning Centre in the area where we lived in Hungary.”

Her children enjoyed their classes and the two years went by quickly. “After witnessing how positively my daughter and son reacted to the Helen Doron lessons, I immediately fell in love with the methodology.”

Language is a mirror of the people who use it, and a reflection of their culture, mentality, technology and other developments affecting their lives.

Technological development rapidly accelerated in the last few decades, and now it’s hard for us to imagine our lives without personal computers, smartphones, 24/7 communication and multiple channels of digital information. New technologies are continually evolving, so they need new representation in language either by borrowing from associated “old school” words, and adapting their meanings to suit the new digital world or by creating completely new vocabulary.

As pioneering gadgets and inventions are rapidly introduced and adapted, we are quick to abandon and neglect the old devices which have become obsolete. Let’s reflect on how English aspects of language have evolved in the last 35 years, how our lives changed during this time, and how the past influences the present. Generation by generation, pronunciations change, new words are borrowed or invented, and the meaning of old words change and morph into new meanings. The rate of change varies, but whether the changes are faster or slower, they build up until the original meaning becomes distant and different.

Where we would be without avatars, hashtags, memes, spam, geeks and other English terms the internet has brought into fashion by using old words to describe new technologies and experiences? Linguists predict that in 10 years the English language will continue to dominate the internet, even among those whose native tongue is not English. However, they expect it to mutate into a variety of different forms that we might not recognise as the language we know today. Online, where there is less pressure to be grammatically precise or use correct spelling, non-native speakers writing to each other, create new forms of the language, without paying close attention to accuracy.

Monika and Shay Jacobi told us how they fortuitously met 23 years ago: Hungarian Monika was an au pair in England with a family that visited Israel a few times a year, and was included in these holidays. One evening, her employer encouraged her to spend the evening having fun in the vibrant city of Tel Aviv, and there she met Shay through a mutual friend. They hit it off right away, especially when Shay charmed her with his guitar playing, and despite religious, cultural and geographical differences, kept in contact. When Monika returned to Israel for a week to see him a few months later, it became apparent that they were meant for each other. “He would start a sentence and I would finish it and vice versa.” Monika remembered. “We were totally on the same wavelength.” Shay agreed.

They were both worried that their parents wouldn’t accept them as a couple, but both sets of parents not only accepted the young pair, they loved their offspring’s choice from the first meeting. Following a short stint in London cut short by visa issues, they decided to get married in Hungary and start their wedded lives together in Israel. Monika continued her career as a child caregiver in Central Israel and discovered one of the boys she was babysitting attended Helen Doron. As she was responsible for taking him to classes, she saw firsthand how impressive the methodology is and how quickly the children learn though fun and movement and eventually, she became friends with the teacher who encouraged her to attend a Teacher Training Course in 2000 and become a certified Helen Doron teacher.

Starting off with 6 groups, Monika launched her new career with support from Shay, who took responsibility for the marketing, advertising and financial aspects, while raising their 2 children, Eden and Daniel. They bought a large flat with a designated room for Monika’s classes, which quickly grew to 120 Helen Doron students. “Helen Doron gave us the flexibility for Monika to be able to stay home with the kids for the first 2 1/2 years of their lives, while continuing to work and build a career at the same time.” Shay added.

They returned to Hungary in 2008 and continued their careers with Helen Doron based on the experience they gleaned in Israel. In 2009 they bought their franchise area 60 kilometers from Budapest, and decided to buy a Gymboree play centre for children to complement their English-teaching business, and combined them.

They currently have a Learning Studio with about 100 students, with plans for expanding. Their business is a real family affair, as Monika’s 21-year-old niece, Yasmin, grew up in the Helen Doron network and recently passed the teacher training course, taking over teaching their teen classes as a very popular teacher, as the teens can really relate to her.

Would you like to join a network in 38 countries and create your own success story?

Spela Ramovs is the proud mother of four-year-old Rui, who has been a Helen Doron English student in Kranj, Slovenia since he was only a year old. His baby sister will also begin classes soon, as the family loves to travel and know they need good English to communicate anywhere in the world.

Spela tells us that she and her husband often recommend Helen Doron to others. “The whole family is actually enjoying Helen Doron, as we are also learning new words we didn’t know before. This way we are stretching our vocabulary beyond business use of English, learning flowers, birds, breeds etc. – interesting indeed! It is really exciting for all the students, but the most valuable for us is seeing our son learning a second language through fun games and movement naturally, with no pressure. We are delighted we can offer this experience to our kids, having Helen Doron in Kranj and being able to attend. Big thanks goes to our teachers that are creative and full of energy and welcome you with a big smile. Rui loves attending class and looks forward to going!”
